Meta is testing messaging capabilities for Threads, but don’t call them DMs

As Threads has grown to over 130 million users, one of the main remaining “missing” features that users often complain about is the lack of direct messaging. But those without DMs may soon have a new option to send messages to other Threads users.

The meta begins Messaging features based on Instagram’s inbox but allowing new messages to be started from within the Threads app. The feature has started For some Threads users, other users report seeing a “message” button above their profile where there used to be a “note” feature. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the change, saying the company was “testing the ability to send messages from Threads to Instagram.”

Note that Threads still doesn’t have its own inbox, and it’s unclear if it ever will. The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, has said several times that he does not want to create a “buyer”. For Threads, however “Enable Instagram Inbox” in the app. A Meta spokesperson later confirmed that “this is not a test of DMs in Threads.”

But while it’s not a full-fledged DM feature, being able to send messages from the Threads app without having to switch to Instagram could at least make messaging from Threads a little less difficult. In fact, checking or replying to these messages will require users to switch to the Instagram app.

This may still seem like a completely unnecessary step, but Mosseri pointed out that creating two versions of the same inbox can easily become cumbersome. “If we can’t eventually make Instagram Inbox work for Threads, we’ll have a tough choice between (1) mirroring Instagram Inbox in Threads and dealing with the weirdness of notification forwarding, and (2) building it. you’re dealing with a completely separate Threads inbox and two redundant message threads with each of your friends having the same handles in two different apps,” he said. in November. “Neither looks great.”
