Indie developer Gardenfiend Games has just released an awesome plant horror game illustrated by its team. The Hollow Knight meets Titan Spirits.” Multi-Year Ordinance, It’s an inspired 2D boss rush game, launching on September 6th for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Dark Souls, Princess Mononokeand art style Magical: The Gathering. Its protagonist is an undead knight with a pitcher plant for a head (or maybe a helmet?) and a pin stuck in one arm, and his hostile world is crawling with plant monsters. Needless to say, I downloaded it immediately.
You can play Multi-Year Ordinance solo or with a friend — it offers both local and online co-op with cross-platform support. There are 15 bosses you can face and every move you make is critical in a fight to the death. Thank goodness you respawn near where you die, because you’ll probably be doing a lot of this with some enemies.
I spent some time with Multi-Year Ordinance this weekend and it’s really fascinating. The ambiance and music are beautiful, creating a wonderfully dark atmosphere as you explore between boss battles and piece together your lore through interactions with talking NPCs. I love a good plant horror, and Multi-Year Ordinance does not disappoint.
