Amazon stops paying bonuses to Alexa developers

Amazon has cut paid bonuses for Alexa developers. With a greater focus on generative AI, third-party applications (skills) of the voice assistant are not a priority. An Amazon spokesperson told Engadget that “old apps just run their course, so we decided to retire them.”

Launched in 2017, when Alexa was all the rage, apps paid developers bonuses for skills that resonated with users. This was part of Amazon’s quest to turn Alexa Skills into a thriving app store. (Did this happen?)

At the company’s Fall 2023 devices event, Amazon previewed the next-generation version of Alexa with generative AI capabilities like ChatGPT. With its AI powers, Alexa seemed versatile enough to handle all kinds of queries and requests without having to manually create apps and skills. Alexa isn’t going anywhere; Amazon just makes you think for yourself.
