Marshall sells Middleton as theirs flagship Bluetooth speaker — and the company’s largest portable with a waterproof rating. Weighing in at four pounds, it’s still small enough to throw in a backpack, but large enough to house three battery cells that add up to 9,600 mAh of charge to provide 20 hours of runtime. You can even siphon off some of that water to charge the phone via the USB-C port.
It pumps out 360-degree sound from two 15-watt woofers, two 10-watt tweeters, and a pair of passive radiators. We found the output to be respectable, handling low frequencies well. Marshall’s sound tends to have good dynamic range combined with considerable depth, and that’s what you get here.
The Middleton is also the largest model to support Stack Mode, allowing it to be paired with another Middleton or a smaller Emberton II or Willen. Pairing is done using the app and double-clicking the Bluetooth buttons on the speakers.
Speaking of other music boxes, Emberton II speakerAlso on sale is what we call one of the best options under $200 in that speaker guide. It’s down 21 percent to $134, which isn’t an all-time low — it was last down $14 Black Friday. It’s not the loudest speaker in its size range, but the sound is nicely balanced and a good accompaniment for small gatherings.
