Apple does Major changes to the App Store in Europe In response to the new laws of the European Union. Starting in March, Apple will allow users in the EU to download and make purchases outside of its own App Store. These changes are already being stress tested in iOS 17.4 beta.
Developers will be able to accept payments and distribute apps outside App Store for the first time. Apple will still have a review process for apps that don’t come from its store, but it will focus on “platform integrity and protecting users from things like malware.” The company warns that it is less likely to address other risks such as fraud, abuse and harmful content.
Apple is also changing its commission structure, so developers will pay 17 percent for subscriptions and in-app purchases, dropping to 10 percent for “most developers” after the first year. The company is introducing a new three percent “payment processing” fee for transactions through its store, and a new €0.50 “core technology fee” for all app downloads after the first million installs.
That’s a lot of new money numbers to process, and it may shake out differently for different developers. Apple says the new fee structure will result in most developers paying the company less because the core technology fee will affect larger developers more.
All this means that, yes, Fortnite returns.

Microsoft has announced the launch of Mesh, a feature that allows employee avatars to meet in the same place, even if real people are spread out. The virtual communication platform works through Microsoft Teams. Currently, Microsoft Mesh is only available on desktop computers and Meta Quest VR devices (if workers want a more immersive experience). When Ray-Ban first reviewed its Meta smart glasses, multimodal AI wasn’t ready. This feature allows the glasses to respond to queries based on what you’re looking at. Meta has now made multimodal search available for “early access”. Multimodal search is impressive, if not yet fully useful. But Meta AI’s grasp of real-time data is tenuous at best.

In yesterday’s earnings call, Elon Musk confirmed that a “next-generation low-cost” Tesla EV is in the works and said he is “optimistic” that it will arrive in the second half of 2025. He also promised a “revolutionary production system” for the car. Reuters reported that the new car will be a small crossover called Redwood. Musk previously said the automaker is working on two new EV models that could together sell up to five million a year.
Musk said the company’s new manufacturing technology would be “very hard to copy” because “you have to copy the machine that makes the car … the machine that starts production.”
