Samsung has confirmed that the SmartThings app update has caused major issues for older Samsung Galaxy smartphones. 9 to 5 Google First, an update that has been rolling out from Samsung over the past few days has been reported to connect devices from the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series phones. The publication also found that some users reported the same problem with the Galaxy M51 and A90 models. After downloading the update, the devices reportedly got stuck in a boot loop and never fully booted up.
Affected devices can perform a factory reset to restore functionality, but this is not a perfect solution. This should make the phone usable, but any data not already backed up will be lost.
In a statement sent to Engadget on Friday, a spokesperson confirmed the issue: “We are aware that a limited number of Galaxy smartphones running Android 12 are constantly restarting when updating to the latest version of the SmartThings app,” the spokesperson told Engadget. “Upon discovery, we immediately suspended the update and are working to resolve the issue. Affected customers can contact the Samsung Contact Center for support for their devices.”
Firmware for older models can be a problem for any hardware manufacturer. The Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ they are now five years old, which is the age at which companies can stop regular updates.
