At an event today, Microsoft unveiled the redesign Surface Pro‘s keyboard is a facelift that adds improved stability, better haptics, and even a bold font option for added readability. But starting at $350, it won’t come cheap.
Available for pre order Along with Microsoft’s updated version today convertible tablet, the Surface Pro Flex keyboard has a familiar design, but there are a number of tweaks to make it more adaptable and accessible than before. Inside, carbon fiber struts provide increased stability, an important change as the Flex can now be used when fully detached from the Surface. This means you can position the tablet in a variety of ways, such as writing on your lap while sitting on a nearby desk or table. There’s also a new retractable riser on the bottom, so you can adjust the angle of the keyboard while using it.
The Flex’s touchpad is also 14 percent larger than before and features Microsoft’s Precision Haptics to provide more detailed feedback and help people with limited hand movement. At the same time, the keyboard will also come with an optional bold key font to support the visually impaired. Finally, as we’ve seen with Microsoft’s previous convertible keyboards, the Flex has a built-in magnetic charging slot for the Surface Slim Pen.
That said, it’s important to note that the $350 base price of the Surface Pro Flex keyboard doesn’t include a stylus, so if you want a stylus, it’ll only come to $450. Thankfully, the Flex is backwards compatible with the Surface Pro 8 and Pro 9, so if all you want is a fancy new keyboard, there’s no need to buy a whole new tablet.
The Surface Pro Flex Keyboard is available for pre-order today in two colors (black and glossy sapphire), with official sales beginning June 18.
