Have you ever wondered if your Airbnb trip includes being on candid cam? Well, there’s good news for you and your stress levels, because you won’t have to worry about it anytime soon. Airbnb has announced new privacy policies it completely prohibits the use of indoor cameras.
Previously, the company allowed homeowners to keep cameras in communal areas, but banned them in places like bedrooms and bathrooms. Landlords technically had to disclose any cameras in the rental space, but this change removes any ambiguity (or problems for many of us who don’t read the entire listing description).
In addition to banning indoor cameras, Airbnb also limited the use of outdoor ones. Landlords must disclose any outdoor cameras on the property, and these cameras cannot show indoor spaces or be on grounds. "greater expectation of privacy," such as an outdoor shower or sauna. They can also use doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors. However, the latter also requires disclosure and can only measure decibel levels and cannot record or transmit sounds. Airbnb hosts can post them only in public spaces.
Any host found violate this policy their listing or their entire account may be deleted by Airbnb. If you’re planning spring trips, be sure to read your list carefully to find out about any cameras — the new rules don’t come into effect until April 30.
