X is slowly rolling out audio and video calls to users who don’t pay for its premium subscription service, formerly known as Twitter Blue. Company engineer Enrique Barragan shared this news on the platform. The company initially has launched the function for iOS users Last year, it gave paying subscribers the ability to call other people through the app, a step toward making Xi the “everything” app that Elon Musk wants. Earlier this year, the ability made its way Android devicesbut the ability to call was limited to Premium subscribers only.
By the end of January, Musk said X will make audio-video calling available to everyone once the company is confident it’s solid. When we hit the phone icon in DMs, they still require us to subscribe to X Premium to be able to call, but those who get the update will be able to call even if they’re not paying subscribers. Officer X support page the feature now says that all accounts can make and receive calls, though both parties must communicate at least once via Direct Messaging. In the past it only said “Premium subscribers can make audio and video calls”.
Along with announcing the introduction of the skills, Barragan revealed that users will be able to accept calls from anyone in the app if they choose. Audio and video calls were automatically enabled for us when we checked the DMs’ Settings menu, which was configured so that we (thankfully) could only receive calls from people we followed. We already see the “Everyone” option there, but it’s ready to be picked up by the most intrepid X users.
