It’s been a while since we’ve seen wireless charging demos like ours Oppo and Xiaomiso that CES 2024 We were surprised when we came across a new one from Infinix, another Chinese mobile brand. This “AirCharge” technology uses low-frequency magnetic resonance to deliver up to 25W of wireless power, and it works at distances of up to 20cm (7.87in) – double Oppo’s previous demo – and at angles of up to 60 degrees .
Infinix believes that this case is ideal for users who want to keep their phones charged while playing games or watching videos without having to carry a cable in both hands. With this improved charging distance, you can mount the AirCharge pad under a desk and then you’ll have a hidden charging area. Before that, Infinix will have to find a way to avoid accidentally heating nearby metal objects. There are external object detection methods for existing “2D” wireless charging solutions, but this is more complicated when the charging area moves from “2D” to “3D”.
Another safety precaution to remember is in case of a sudden drop in the distance between the phone and the charging panel – it is not good to increase the voltage sharply in such a device. So Infinix has already implemented (and patented) an overvoltage protection circuit at both ends of the chain. The company doesn’t yet have a timeframe for launching AirCharge in a mass-produced device, but it hopes to eventually use the technology to push the industry standard for wireless charging over the air.
Infinix also showcased its ‘E-Color Shift Technology’, which uses E Ink’s Prism 3, which lets you change the color patterns on the back of your phone. This feature supports eight primary colors, which can then be expanded with different levels of shading, and this can be done in a pattern with over 100 customizable fields. As with conventional E Ink displays, after this Prism 3 panel is refreshed, the new color pattern remains without power consumption.
Once the company figures out how to overcome the thermal performance and thickness issues, it hopes to bring this exciting feature to consumer devices within a year or two. Up until this point, you’ll be able to customize the color model through the app – we couldn’t see this since our demo used dummy phones instead. Finally, Infinix has introduced “Extreme Temperature Battery” technology for users who have to endure the cold. While the capacities of conventional lithium-ion batteries are drastically reduced or even damaged at low temperatures, Infinix’s solid-state battery will continue to function even at temperatures as low as -40°C or -40°F. Similarly, when measured at -20°C or -4°F, the Infinix solution will achieve a 50-300 percent increase in endurance time compared to others. We may see this battery technology in an Infinix phone in the second half of 2025.
