Starting August 23rd this year, when someone clicks on a goo.gl link, it may first take them to a page with a warning that the link “will not work in the near future” before taking them to their desired website. Now there is company announced it will completely stop supporting all existing goo.gl links: URLs will return a “404 page not found” result until August 25, 2025.
Google is giving developers enough time to switch to other shortcuts by displaying the aforementioned warning page to visitors over the next year. It will initially only show a percentage of the available links, but that percentage will continue to grow until it appears on most, if not all, goo.gl links by the closing date. The company warns that interstitial warning pages can be disruptive and prevent users from accessing the URL they actually want to go to, so it recommends that developers change shortened links as soon as possible.
The goo.gl link shortener joins quite a few legacy features and services in Google’s ever-growing product graveyard. They include Hangouts chat software, Stadia cloud gaming service and Google+which once attempted to take over Facebook.
