Between 2014 and 2016 a YouTube called the channel One Painting Per Frame posted 28 video essays criticizing films and exploring various aspects of filmmaking. Taylor Ramos and Tony Zhou, the people behind the channel, talked about how Robin Williams was a master at blocking and using movement to describe his characters, as well as how Steven Spielberg it takes a long time all the time that tends to be overlooked by the public among many other topics. Now, the duo is back and promises more video essays after the short debuts at the Fantasia International Film Festival on July 20.
Ramos and Zhou wrote and directed their upcoming film Second starring Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Ethan Hwan. They didn’t share many details about the film, though film festival website says it’s about an “alternate version of the current world where dueling is still acceptable,” where Philip must “play the role of ‘The Second’ on the day of his only son’s duel.”
Each Frame a Painting has over 2 million subscribers on YouTube and was one of the creators who helped legitimize video essays on the website. Ramos and Zhou also created Netflix series Voir, produced by David Fincher, also featured video essays about the film. Seeing as how they promise new YouTube posts ahead of movie premieres, we’ll see them upload a new batch of videos in the coming days.
