He didn’t fully explain why he ended support for the two boxes that each debuted — except to say it’s doing it to “maintain the best Netflix experience possible.” To be fair, it’s hard to do on older hardware that won’t be able to support newer codecs.
In a broader sense, it’s unfortunate that large utilities are discarding old equipment, especially since it will increase the chances of those products becoming waste and ending up in landfills. However, there often comes a point where it no longer makes sense to maintain support for a declining user base of outdated devices.
