Samsung will add new health and fitness features based on artificial intelligence Galaxy Watch later this year. The company on Wednesday unveiled AI features on the device, including personalized health scores, tips, sleep metrics and suggested workout routines.
One of the Galaxy Watch’s big AI improvements is the new Energy Score, which learns from various personal metrics to provide “comprehensive health insights.” The model uses a variety of sleep data, including when the user goes to bed, how long and how well they sleep, and heart rate and variability during sleep. Physical activity during waking hours is also taken into account.
Along similar lines, the Galaxy Watch will also add Health Tips, which takes the analysis of that data a step further with “insights, motivational tips and guidance” relative to your personal fitness goals.
Sleep features also get AI-enhanced improvements and provide additional information about your nighttime habits. New sleep algorithms can analyze sleep movement, latency, heart rate and breathing rate. They will join existing tracking features such as snoring hours, blood-oxygen levels and sleep cycles.
For die-hard runners, Galaxy Watch gets new aerobic threshold (AT) and anaerobic threshold (AnT) heart rate zone metrics to help you stay within optimal training windows. High-intensity cyclists also get some love with Functional Threshold Power (FTP) metrics. Samsung says the latter will only need 10 minutes of continuous cycling (4km/h or faster) to calculate.
The new Workout Mode feature will allow you to combine different types of workouts for a personalized routine, allowing you to seamlessly switch from one to another. Meanwhile, the new Race feature will task you with trying to beat your previous times on a set route.
Samsung says the Galaxy Watch may not be the only device to get new AI-powered health features. “Bringing Galaxy AI to the Galaxy Watch is just the beginning of this process, and we’re excited to showcase more integrations across our Galaxy portfolio soon,” the company said. Samsung can officially introduce Wearable Galaxy Ring (originally announced in January without details) at the next Unpacked event in July. The Like ours the device will monitor sleep based on heart rate, movement and breathing, and give personalized advice.
New Galaxy Watch features will arrive in the One UI 6 Watch update later this year. Samsung says a “limited number” of Watch owners will be able to test them in a beta program starting in June.
