Microsoft is celebrating World Password Day by helping to kill them (IT people deserve a holiday too!). The company finally rolled About two years later, consumer passkey support for Microsoft accounts apple and Google.
After you set it up, the passkey lets you sign in to your Microsoft account using your face, fingerprint, or device PIN. It works not only on Windows, but also on mobile and desktop platforms from Apple and Google.
Passkeys are an easier and more secure way to access your account. They use what’s called a cryptographic key pair to ensure that only you can access it. Half of the pair is stored on your local device, accessible only through secure local access. The rest remains in the app or website. Requiring them both to log in acts as a deterrent against things like password leaks and phishing attacks.
In addition to Apple, Google, and now Microsoft, companies that accept passkeys include Amazon, 1Password, Dashlane, Docusign, eBay, PayPal, and WhatsApp (among others). Google said on Thursday that it has the switch keys it’s already been used a billion times.
Microsoft’s key support is starting today in the company’s desktop applications and websites, including Microsoft 365 (Office) and its Copilot AI assistant. The Windows maker says hotkey support for its mobile apps will “continue in the coming weeks.”
