In January, startup Rabbit unveiled its first device at CES 2024. The R1 is a charming, vibrant orange AI machine with a camera, scroll wheel, and ambitious demos. The device is now shipping to early adopters (and tech reviewers), and we’ve got some hands-on experience to tide you over until we get a full review.
Designed by Teenage Engineering, who have put their design talents to use, it’s undeniably cute History of the game as well as Nothing latest phones as well as musical instruments. Like all of these, it combines a retro-futuristic aesthetic with solid build quality, glossy surfaces, and glass and metal accents.
Then again, the Humane AI Pin was also a cool piece of technology, but it was also… garbage. The Rabbit R1 is a different device. First, it costs $199 — less than a third of the AI Pin’s $700. Humane also charges a $24 monthly subscription fee to use the thing—you don’t need a base at all for the R1. Immediately, it is better.
However, the category of AI assistant-centric devices is very new. Rabbit’s device is different from Humane in terms of both hardware and features, but we know that the R1 is not yet launched with all its features. A few interesting simple tools are missing, such as alarms and calendar support.

Threads are still growing. During the company’s first-quarter earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg shared the latest user numbers for Meta’s latest social network, saying the app “continues to be on the trajectory that I hope to see.”
Notably — but perhaps unsurprisingly — Threads appears to be outperforming X (formerly Twitter), with analytics firm Apptopia showing that Threads has more daily users than X in the US.
App promotions are enabled by default in the start menu.
The latest update to Windows 11 is coming out this week and includes ads for apps in the recommended section of the Start menu. “The Recommended section of the Start menu will show some Microsoft Store apps,” the release notes say. The apps are likely from “a small set of developers.” Thankfully, you can go to Settings > Personalization > Start to get Tips, app promotions, and more. You can restore your previous ad-free Windows experience by turning off Show recommendations for.
