The Combo J9+Engadget’s pick the best vacuum cleaner robot, features an upgraded motor and a four-stage cleaning system that makes multiple passes across your carpets and floors. This version also adds dual rubber brushes for better suction and pressure scrubbing. When it reaches carpets and rugs, its motor automatically raises the vacuum pads to help keep them dry.
The robot requires minimal setup and its new Clean Base can automatically fill the water tank, leaving you with less to worry about. The base doubles as a storage unit and looks less like a gadget charging station and more like living room furniture. Installation is as simple as adding water and cleaning solution to the reservoir and adding a mop pad. Maintenance is limited to changing the mop pads and leaning the vacuum cleaner bristles and dust box.
The Combo J9+ ships with Roomba’s OS 7, a new software update that makes the cleaning process even easier. Its Dirt Detective feature remembers the dirtiest places in your home and tackles them first in subsequent cleanings.
The program has an automated setting that keeps the bathroom clean, so you don’t have to worry about tracking dirt and bacteria to other parts of your home. (You can override this manually if you want to get to the bathroom sooner.) Although you lose some of the features of the newer model, it still has 96.4 percent debris removal, obstacle avoidance and a four-stage cleaning system. The device can even return to its base when full and continue to self-discharge for up to 60 days, freeing you to focus on what’s not cleaning.
