Eight years after launch, No Man’s Sky gets computer-generated space stations that are different each time

Man has no Heaven still getting major updates. Developer Hello Games’ Orbital update, scheduled for Wednesday, adds procedurally generated space stations (so they’ll be different each time), a ship editor, and a Guild system to the nearly eight-year-old space exploration sim.

Until now, space stations have been one of several parts Man has no Heaven not generated and randomized by algorithms as something truly unique. That changes with today’s update, which uses game engine improvements to “create expansive interiors and exteriors with improved reflections and metallic surfaces.”

The larger scale of the stations will be evident from the outside, while their interiors will include new shops, play and things to do. Hello Games describes them as “uniquely customized” based on the virtual inhabitants’ system, race, and locale.

Inside the stations you will find the new ship editor. Hello Games said that the title previously kept ship customization in order to keep its focus on exploration. (If players could build any ship they wanted at any time, it would kill some of the fun of discovering the ships available for purchase in-game.) In that spirit, you’ll still need to collect, trade, and salvage parts. Set yourself up the way you want.

The game’s improved Guild system also makes factions a bigger part of the experience in today’s update. You can find new Guild ambassadors on space stations, where you can join a club, buy supplies and valuables, and make donations to increase your status in the group.

Fleets are also improving. With today’s update, you can send your fleet of frigates on far-flung missions – and if they get into trouble, you can step in and save the day. Sounds like a fun twist to help scratch anyone’s space fantasy itch.

Man has no Heaven owners can install the Orbital update today, including engine improvements, a UI update, and “more.”
