Senate tells social media CEOs they have ‘blood on their hands’

The CEOs of Meta, Snap, Discord, X and TikTok have testified in online hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee on child abuse. During the hearing, Mark Zuckerberg, Evan Spiegel, Jason Citron, Linda Yaccarino and Shaw Chew spent nearly four hours. grilled by lawmakers about his record on child safety.

Senator Dick Durbin, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, noted that Discord “accepted the services of Citron only by subpoena” after US marshals went to the company’s headquarters. Compared to previous hearings with technology executives, it was a more serious environment. The room was filled with parents of children who had been victims of online abuse.

Durbin said: “Niffat has been used to groom, abduct and abuse children. “Meta’s Instagram helped to unite and promote a network of pedophiles. Snapchat’s disappearing messages have been picked up by criminals who extort money from young victims. TikTok has become the platform of choice for predators to enter, recruit and groom children for their abuse. The proliferation of CSAM (child sexual exploitation material) at X increased as the company lost credibility and security manpower.

Of course, there wouldn’t be a US Senate hearing if the politicians didn’t embarrass themselves: Sen. John F. Kennedy asked Snap’s Evan Spiegel if he “yada yada yada” (Spiegel claimed he was “unfamiliar” with the phrase). “Can we agree … what you do is what you believe, everything else is just curds,” Kennedy asked. (… Yes?)

X’s Yaccarino, who has repeatedly claimed that X is a “new company” (not Twitter with its ill-received rebrand), said the platform is considering adding parental controls. “As a 14-month-old company, we have prioritized child protection and safety measures,” he said. “And we’re just starting to talk and discuss how we can develop parental controls.”

Twitter was founded in 2006.

Universal Music Group is threatening to pull all of its music from TikTok today after negotiations over royalties broke down. The company wrote in an open letter that TikTok wants to pay a fraction of the rate charged by other social media sites. “As our negotiations continued, TikTok tried to bully us into accepting a deal that was cheaper than the previous deal, far below fair market value, and did not reflect their exponential growth.”

According to information, the parties have been negotiating over the past year. Such deals are worth billions of dollars each year to music publishing companies, and Universal is the world’s largest record label. If no deal is reached, TikTok creators will lose access to songs by stars including Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd, Drake and others.

with Persona 3 Reload, developer Altus chose the most confusing (and impressive) entry in the series to remake. There are some big changes that you won’t notice if you haven’t played the 2006 original recently, new English-speaking voice actors (all Japanese VAs return from the original) and, interestingly, the most voice-over cutscenes of any game. The Persona series. Oh, sometimes it’s incredibly beautiful. But damn it makes me old.

Hideo Kojima isn’t just giving away on PlayStation’s PlayStation Death Stranding 2 another nudge, also saying it’s developing a brand new game for the PlayStation. It will be an action-espionage title codenamed PHYSINT – so it has nothing to do with the Metal Gear Solid series that spawned its name. Kojima Productions has begun early work on the project, but won’t go into full production until the team is finished Death Stranding 2. Which one is looking for boring.
