The Apple Watch SE is a good option for iPhone users who aren’t yet into the smartwatch ecosystem, or who might be sticking with an older Apple Watch but don’t need a flagship model. The second-generation Apple Watch SE has dropped to its lowest price yet. The 40mm GPS model (ie without LTE connectivity) has dropped to $149.
The second-generation Apple Watch SE is our pick the best budget Apple Watch and we gave 89 points in our 2022 review. It has the same chipset as the Apple Watch Ultra and Series 8, and if you’re coming from, say, a Series 6 or earlier, it should feel faster.
The SE shares some features with the flagship Apple Watches, but not all. It supports accident detection, heart rate monitoring and emergency calls and is water resistant up to 50 meters. We felt that the screen was easy to view even when the sun was bright. Fitness tracking is accurate (this is pretty important!). Perhaps most importantly, the Apple Watch SE is lightweight and easy to wear.
The Ion-X glass isn’t as tough as the sapphire crystal on other new Apple Watch models, so you’ll probably want to be more careful with it. Other features available on other Apple Watch devices that are missing here include an always-on display, blood oxygen monitoring, and a temperature sensor. The very convenient Double Tap function is not available here either.
While we think this is a good price for the second-generation Apple Watch SE, it’s worth considering that a new model could be released in the coming months. Apple is said to be working on it Apple Watch SE with plastic case with the goal of lowering the price and allowing for bolder color choices. It is unlikely that Apple will announce this model before next year.
