It’s Amazon It doubles its investment in Anthropic. The e-commerce giant will provide Anthropic with an additional $4 billion in funding, on top of the $4 billion it committed last year. Although Amazon remains a minority investor, Anthropic has agreed to make Amazon Web Services (AWS) its “key cloud and training partner.”
Prior to today’s announcement, Information there was Amazon wanted Anthropic to condition any additional funding on a commitment to use the company’s in-house AI chips instead of silicon from NVIDIA. Amazon seems to have gotten its way, with both companies noting in separate press releases that Anthropic will use AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to build future foundational models.
In addition, Anthropic said it will partner with Amazon’s Annapurna Labs to develop future Trainium accelerators. “Through deep technical collaboration, we are writing low-level kernels that allow direct communication with Trainium silicon and contributing to the AWS Neuron software stack to power Trainium,” the company said. “Our engineers are working closely with Annapurna’s chip design team to get maximum computational efficiency from the hardware we plan to use to train our most advanced foundational models.”
According to another Anthropic expects to burn more than $2.7 billion by the end. To date, the company has raised $9.7 billion. Either way, it’s given itself some much-needed runway as it competes with OpenAI and other companies in the AI space.
