Paramount has just announced that it is moving forward with a new video game Avatar: The Last AirbenderIt will be developed by Saber Interactive. It’s Saber for the uninitiated Snowrunner and Disassembly. He also has a lot of experience creating licensed content as published Evil Dead: The Game and World War Z: Aftermathamong others.
The new gameplay in the Avatar-verse isn’t all that remarkable on its own. After all, it’s been too long. Paramount is already buzzing about the title, calling it a “AAA RPG” and claiming it will be “the biggest video game in franchise history.” Not exactly a high bar considering the cartoon . There was a good one Bayonetta-like a game but everything else is pretty rubbish.
This upcoming RPG will not follow Aang or Korra. Players will control an “all-new, never-before-seen Avatar.” The game is set “thousands of years” before the events Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. The story was developed “in close collaboration with Avatar Studios,” but we don’t know if franchise creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were involved in any way.
It appears to be an action RPG rather than a turn-based affair, as the press release suggests “dynamic combat” and a quest to “master all four elements.” However, there’s no suggestion of a release date or how far along the game is. Paramount says it’s coming “soon,” but the company hasn’t released a trailer or even artwork, so one person’s “soon” is another’s “probably 2026.”
Anyway, sign me up. I’m a big cabbage head or a proud member of the Aang Gang or whatever the fans call it. Saber Interactive has proven themselves with other pre-existing IPs, so why not this one? It could work.
