MIT biotechnology researcher Lauren “Ren” Ramlan directed the popular computer game Torment use of intestinal bacteria. This in itself doesn’t make the game work, but it does escape (but) on a screen inside a cell wall made entirely of E. coli bacteria.
The researcher applied fluorescent proteins to the bacteria to make them light up like digital pixels and achieved a resolution of 32×48. Their paperRamlan says, “Escape Tormentall one needs is a screen and willpower” Torment works on digital display for pregnancy test.
However, this is not playable. It takes the bacteria 70 minutes to light up one frame of the game, and another eight hours to return to the starting state. So about nine hours per frame. Your Switch doesn’t sound too bad now, does it?

It’s earnings season, so we’re poring over reports and press releases and distressed earnings calls to see what it means. For Microsoft, it was an increase in gaming revenue, finally taking on Activision Blizzard. The entire company reported revenue of $62 billion (up 18 percent from last year) and profit of $21.9 billion (up 33 percent). Microsoft says its total game revenue rose 49 percent, 44 percent of which came from the “net impact” of the Activision deal. Xbox hardware sales increased by only three percent.
The company is banking on the Galaxy S24.
Samsung still hasn’t recovered from the decline in earnings in 2022. In its latest earnings report, it announced annual revenue of KRW 258.94 trillion ($194 billion) and operating profit of KRW 6.57 trillion ($4.9 billion) for fiscal 2023. This is much less than last year. The company says its memory business – which often makes money – has shown signs of recovery, but not enough to prevent it from incurring an operating loss of KRW 2.18 trillion ($1.63 billion) in the fourth quarter of 2023.
