The WH-1000XM5 scored an excellent 95 on us Engadget reviewthanks to improvements in almost every way over our previous favorite headphones WH-1000XM4. Perhaps the biggest is fit and comfort thanks to a more optimal weight distribution, synthetic leather earcups and slightly reduced weight.
Sound quality has also improved thanks to new 30mm carbon fiber drivers that provide more powerful bass. We also saw improved depth, which made music more immersive, as well as greater clarity, which helped us hear finer details. Sony’s DSEE Extreme sound processing system restores the details lost by compression without noticeable impact on sound quality.
ANC is equally impressive. With double the number of noise-canceling microphones found in the M4 and a new proprietary V1 chip, the M5 does a better job of minimizing background noise. In terms of microphone, we found that the M5 offers superior call quality compared to its predecessor. Plus, with ANC on, you get 30 hours of listening time, enough for the longest flights.
The main drawbacks of the WH-1000XM5 headphones compared to the previous model are that they are no longer stackable and lack the granular ANC adjustment found in other models.
