Apple has overhauled the design of the standard AirPods with this model introduced in 2021. Previous models of non-Pro AirPods weren’t sweat and water resistant, but the third generation has an IPX4 rating that should be adequate for exercise. They also boast an improved auto-pause method over previous versions, using both an accelerometer and a skin-detecting sensor so they feel better when removed from your ear.
The third-generation AirPods are powered by Apple’s H1 chip, which allows for quick one-touch pairing and always-on Siri. They offer Adaptive EQ, spatial audio and dynamic head tracking – but no active noise cancellation, which is exclusive to the AirPods Pro – and produce better sound than previous models. In Engadget’s review, they scored 88 points for comfort-oriented design, sound quality and battery life.
Third-generation AirPods have noticeably longer battery life. Apple says these AirPods get about 6 hours of battery life on a single charge, but in our tests they lasted more than an hour. With a charging case, they can get a total of about 30 hours of life. If you need to charge them when you’re out and about, you just need to pop them in the box in five minutes to get another hour of playtime. If you don’t mind features like active noise cancellation, the third-generation AirPods are a great bet, especially at the low price.
