Journalists, creatives, and long-time VCs at X now have a new way to be tiresome about the main topic. X now allows approved organizations and Premium+ subscribers “Articles.”
The feature adds a basic text editing interface that includes built-in media and some text formatting options, such as the ability to create bulleted lists. It also appears that articles can be longer than the current 25,000 character limit for premium subscribers’ “longer posts” feature. In my initial tests, I hit the character limit for articles by just over 100,000 characters, or about 15,000 words.
The editing interface looks like this:
Note that Twitter started working on longer posts long before Elon Musk took over the company. The company first showed its first version called “Notes”., aimed to recruit newsletter writers and other creatives. Musk confirmed that the means of publishing are still at work.
The proliferation of publishing outlets is notable because Musk has often been hostile to journalists on his platform. Last year, Musk changed X’s recommendation algorithm to include links to the Substack newsletter platform in users’ For You feeds, this limited access to the service for many freelance writers. X too from news stories shared on the platform last fall (the headlines eventually returned in a smaller font).
