Uber’s latest gig economy play is offering out coders for hire


reports that Uber has begun hiring independent contractors and coders for hire for its data tagging services.

Uber describes its new Scaled Solutions division as a platform for “analysts, testers and independent data operators.” . Scaled Solutions began life as an in-house team managing “large-scale annotation tasks” for Uber’s other services. It has now expanded to provide encoders and data taggers for outside companies Pokémon Go developer Niantic Inc. and Aurora Innovations, a self-driving trucking software firm. Aurora has acquired Uber’s self-driving unit in 2020 and Uber is one of Aurora’s investors.

Uber this month started hiring workers for its Scaled Solutions division from India, the US, Canada, Poland and Nicaragua. Scaled Solutions has also announced some corporate positions in San Francisco, New York and Chicago. According to the onboarding FAQ reviewed by BloombergThe contractor’s salary is distributed monthly and the total amounts are based on the tasks performed by the contractors. The company has not announced any specific tariffs Bloomberg for a new crop of independent workers.
