GOG is starting an effort to make older video games playable on modern hardware. The will label classic titles that the platform has taken steps to adapt to match modern PC systems, controllers and screen resolutions, while sticking to its DRM-free policy. The move could breathe new life into games from decades past, as GOG did with an update two years ago. . So far, 92 games have received the protection treatment.
“Our guarantee is that they work and will continue to work,” the company said in a video announcing the initiative.
As more and more games become digital only, preservation has become a hot topic. Not just some platforms is the disk drive by default, but ownership of your library is more ephemeral than it seems. After all, there are most in-game purchases and licenses may be revoked (eg Crew the players know ).
