Sega is delisting a bunch of its classic games for modern devices. Company placed frequently asked questions on their website (via Eurogamer), breaking down the Sega Classics games that each platform will lose next month. The collection includes some of the publisher’s golden oldies, e.g Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe and The Altered Monster.
Over 60 Sega Classics games will be delisted on December 7th at 2:59 PM ET on Steam, Xbox, Switch, and PlayStation. In addition to the above-mentioned titles, it includes (among many others) those that leave. Virtua fighter 2, Streets of RageThe Golden Ax Trilogy, Dolphin Ecco and the most 90s game ever, Toejam and Earl.
The Sega Genesis Classics bundle will also be delisted on Switch and PlayStation on the same day. However, the FAQ notes that “select custom classic titles” can still be played with a Switch Online membership. If you have any outgoing games (or grab them before the cutoff date), they will remain playable in your library. But don’t expect any bug fixes or other software updates to progress.
Sega did not disclose why the games were removed from the list. But considering that, it’s an odd choice the company is back in business Crazy Taxi (as multiplayer AAA game), Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe and Streets of Rage. Keeping older players’ nostalgic forerunners available to jog their memories and introduce franchises to younger players seems like a marketing opportunity that outweighs the potential confusion of listing multiple games with similar or identical titles.
