Google CEO says a quarter of the company’s new code is already AI generated

Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed on the company’s earnings call that artificial intelligence now generates more than a quarter of the new code for its products. . In other words, AI tools are already having an absolutely massive impact on software development.

Human programmers controlling computer-generated code is one thing, Pichai said. The CEO noted that coding with artificial intelligence helps “increase productivity and efficiency,” enabling engineers to “do more and move faster.”

There are no two ways about it. 25 percent is a lot, and Google is just one company that relies on artificial intelligence algorithms to handle complex coding tasks. according to more than 75 percent of respondents already use or “plan to use” AI tools to help develop software. Other 92 percent of US-based developers report that they are currently using AI coding tools.

This brings us to the angry elephant in the room. As AI continues to absorb coding tasks, human expertise begins to diminish. This can ultimately lead to a reduced knowledge base where people don’t know how to correct errors created by AI algorithms, which in turn are created by other AI algorithms. We could be looking at a state of confusion where it is almost impossible to detect errors between generations of AI code. Fun times!

We’re not quite there yet, but AI-powered coding shows no signs of slowing down. The process began to rise rapidly on GitHub in 2022 . Since then, companies such as Anthropic, Meta, Google, and OpenAI have all released AI coding software packages. GitHub recently announced Copilot With models from Anthropic and Google in addition to OpenAI.
