Google is reportedly working on a new Android API it’s calling Rich Persistent Notifications, which will allow apps to display information at a glance in the status bar, similar to Apple’s Live Activities on Dynamic Island on the iPhone. This is according to the journalist Seeing the code in Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 release. It can work a lot like the time tracker that appears when you make a phone call, with a little text in a bubble at the top of the screen that you can click to open the app for more details.
writes for Android AuthorityRahman says the API will “allow apps to create chips with their own text and background color that live in the status bar.” This can be especially useful for things like transit updates, allowing users to track relevant information like ride times or Uber’s ETA while using other apps. This feature is not yet complete and it may be some time before we see it. Rahman predicts that it will come with Android 16.
