Cinemark’s Gladiator II AR-enabled popcorn bucket claims ‘you can eat war’


The popcorn bucket wars With Cinemark’s latest entry, it made literal sense Gladiator II. The theater chain’s new entry doesn’t just look like a Roman coliseum, it plays a beautiful augmented reality gladiatorial battle (AR-ENA, get it?) when you point your smartphone at the QR code below. The butter on the popcorn is Cinemark’s all-you-can-eat-war slogan.

In fact, the entire ad copy is brilliantly seductive: “Every grain of power, every grain of honor is for the glory of Rome. When you preside over this gladiatorial arena… eat war. Finish the popcorn and unleash the battle within. you will be have fun.” intoned Honest Trailer styling takes it up a notch.

This is the latest popcorn bucket movie commercial after high-profile entries Dune and Deadpool. we have also seen entries for Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and others that don’t quite capture the same zeitgeist.

Sure, you might have to wipe off some popcorn oil to read the Cinemark bucket’s QR code, and the AR animation of two fighting gladiators is reminiscent of a PlayStation 2 render. Not yet Dune neither Wolverine buckets have the desired interactive properties, therefore Gladiator II bucket kicked them there – and that’s a clever way to pull a yarn in the tech press.

Cinemark’s ship is also shaped like a popcorn bucket with a coliseum shape. The same cannot be said Dunesandworm-shaped bucket or Deadpool’s Wolverine bucket head (Dune director Denis Villeneuve called the latter “terrible” and he’s right). If you want to expand your collection, Gladiator II the popcorn bucket is coming “soon” and the movie itself will hit theaters on November 22nd.
