OpenAI and Microsoft are funding projects to bring more AI tools to the newsroom. The duo will provide up to $10 million in grants to Chicago Public Media Minnesota Star Tribune, Newsday (Long Island, NY), Philadelphia Enquirer and Seattle Times. Each of the publications will hire a two-year AI fellow to develop projects to implement technology and improve business sustainability. In the second round, three more stations are expected to receive scholarship grants.
OpenAI and Microsoft are each contributing $2.5 million in direct funding, as well as $2.5 million in software and enterprise loans. The Lenfest Institute of Journalism is collaborating with OpenAI and Microsoft on the project and news today.
To date, the relationship between journalism and artificial intelligence has largely shifted from dubious to adversarial. OpenAI and Microsoft sued the companies , , . Some publications accused ChatGPT of plagiarizing their articles, while other claims scraped web content for AI model training without permission or compensation. Other media preferred the negotiations; was one of the latest companies to contract with OpenAI for rights to its content.
There is OpenAI in a separate development Aaron Chatterjee as the first Chief Economist. Chatterjee is a professor at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and has also served on President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers and President Joe Biden’s Commerce Department.
