The latest iPad Pro It’s more of a tablet than most people need, full stop. But if you’ve got cash to burn, are determined to use the iPad as your primary mobile computer, or just want the most technically impressive iPad possible, this is it.
We gave a new iPad Pro 84 points in our view. Like the iPad Air, it comes in 11- and 13-inch models: The former starts at $999 and the latter at $1,299. That’s pretty expensive for most people, but for that money you get a number of perks compared to Apple’s other tablets.
The most important of these is the Pro’s “tandem OLED” panel. Compared to the LCD screen on the iPad Air, it produces richer colors and deeper, more uniform blacks. Gaming and scrolling web pages look smoother thanks to a faster 120Hz refresh rate. It can also get significantly brighter, reaching up to 1000 nits in SDR and 1600 nits with HDR highlights.
This is where the “tandem” part comes into play. In fact, Apple stacks two OLED panels on top of each other to improve peak brightness, a (relative) weakness of traditional OLED displays. this a leapbut the only thing you really need to know is that this screen is an absolute delight – one of the best we’ve seen on any consumer device other than a tablet. For watching movies or editing media, you really can’t do better. This same display technology is used in both the 11- and 13-inch iPad Pro models, unlike the previous generation, so which one is best comes down to personal preference.
The design of the Pro is similar to that of the iPad Air, but slightly thinner and lighter. On paper, the difference isn’t huge, but the Pro’s slimmer bezels make them a bit easier to hold. This is especially meaningful for the 13-inch model.
Another title is the upgrade Apple’s new M4 SoCthis is currently only available with the new Pros. If the M2 is overkill for the vast majority of casual and pro-level iPad tasks, the M4 is a megakill; he easily chewed everything we threw at him. But it should be even more future-proof, and if your work involves high-quality media editing, heavy use of machine learning, and so on, it can save a few seconds here and there.

The iPad Pro is the only iPad with Face ID, which is a bit more convenient than getting a fingerprint scanner. It’s the only one with a Thunderbolt USB-C port, which is technically faster for transferring large files. With four internal speakers instead of two, it sounds more robust than the Air. Its camera system isn’t that different, but it includes a flash for easier scanning of documents and can record video. Apple’s ProRes format. Its front camera is also on the long side. If most of these features suit you, then yes, this is the idea. If you’re not willing to pay for that gorgeous OLED display, the iPad Air comes close enough for a more palatable price. And while the iPad Pro is a class-leading tablet, it’s still an iPad after all. Some creative professionals might consider it a laptop replacement, but for most people, iPadOS still makes multitasking and other computing tasks more complex than they do on a MacBook.
