Nightdive Studios revives a cult classic 3DO game from 1996


Nightdive Studios has reimagined another cult classic game for a modern audience. Time to Kill: Resurrected It is a 1996 update 3DO and PC original. To the uninitiated, the game at the time was notable for its attempt to mix full-motion video (FMV) with a first-person shooter. When it aired during the heyday of Bill Clinton’s first term as president, it was truly unlike anything else.

Like most Nightdive remakes, Time to Kill: Resurrected not a simple remaster. This title features 4K visuals, 144Hz frame cap and other modern graphical niceties like anti-aliasing. The menu display and 2D screens have also been redesigned.

As for the gameplay, fans will now have access to all the weapons from both the 3DO and PC versions of the game. Back in the 1990s, several weapons were exclusive to each platform. There’s also a lot of newly discovered content that was cut from the original, including the pool house scene and the shipwreck.

The 50 live-action FMV sequences have been completely reworked and they really pop in this remake. Players can switch between the original sprites and updated visuals, which is always a nice touch. Nightdive promises “high environmental textures, smoother gameplay, more responsive controls.”

Loading times between territories have also been completely eliminated. Those load times were pretty brutal in the 1990s, if memory serves. Time to Kill: Resurrected It is currently available via Steam for PC. The sale continues, with the title reduced from $25 to $20.

Nightdive Studios has been churning out all sorts of high-quality remakes and remasters lately. It managed was well received by critics remastered Star Wars: The Dark Forces and a a complete remake System shock. was a company recently acquired by Atari.
