FCC launches a formal inquiry into why broadband data caps are terrible


Federal Communications Commission it will launch an updated investigation into broadband data caps and how they affect both the consumer experience and company competition. FCC requires from consumers about their experiences with limited broadband service. The agency has officially opened collect public comments that will further inform its actions around broadband data limits.

“Restricting consumer data can cut off small businesses from their customers, impose fees on low-income families, and prevent people with disabilities from using the tools they rely on to communicate,” said FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel. “As the nation’s leading communications agency, it’s our responsibility to dig deeper into these practices and ensure that consumers come first.”

This topic has been hot lately, and the FCC has launched another one about the experience of restricting access to the Internet last year. In April 2024, the agency successfully required ISPs to offer clear about service plans detailing additional charges, discounts, download and upload speeds. Data caps may also come under additional fire, as the FCC has attempted classifies broadband as a basic service. However, bringing back net neutrality has not been a simple journey as the agency has faced from broadband providers.
