Tesla’s Warner Bros. At Discovery’s We, Robot event at its studio in California, the company finally unveiled its robot taxi. The car is expected to go into production before 2027, but even Musk cautioned against that, saying he was “very optimistic about the timeframes.”
The Cybercab it has no steering wheel and according to Elon Musk (with a pinch of salt!), it could be very cheap to run. The Tesla executive said the operating cost of the robotaxi would be 30 to 40 cents, including taxes, and 20 cents per mile. He also confirmed that people can buy one and that Tesla will sell the Cybercab for less than $30,000. He still, as expected, said something strange. Musk said he envisions a future where humans own multiple robot taxis and manage a fleet like shepherds. Huh?
The technology is slightly different from most of its robotaxis competitors. Tesla has long omitted the radars and sensors widely used by other robotaxis like Waymo, going instead for cameras and artificial intelligence object detection. There’s also no charging port, which uses inductive charging instead, so a completely different infrastructure is needed to keep these vehicles on the road.
Not one to waste a big event, Musk also briefly introduced the Robovan — an autonomous van that can carry up to 20 people and carry cargo — and he advanced a line of Optimus robots serving drinks to attendees during the event.
