Along with the new Arrow Lake family of desktop hardware, Intel also gave us some information today about its upcoming Arrow Lake H mobile chips for high-performance notebooks. First of all, they’re not expected to arrive until the first quarter of 2025 – but it might be worth the wait, as Intel says they’ll be offering a powerful new Xe GPU with XMX. With this upgrade, the GPU alone will offer four times better AI workload processing than previous chips, along with double the ray tracing performance and double the cache (8MB L2).
Note that these new chips will still lag behind the company’s chips less powerful Lunar Lake processors When it comes to NPU and total AI TOPS (tera operations per second) numbers. Arrow Lake H’s NPU will reach 13 TOPS, the new GPU will reach 77 and the CPU will offer 9 TOPS. Taken together, it will offer up to 99 TOPS of performance. Lunar Lake, meanwhile, boasts 48 TOPS NPUs and up to 120 TOPS system-wide AI performance.
The difference makes sense if you think about what these chips are designed for. Lunar Lake is primarily intended for ultraportables and slim workstations, while Arrow Lake H chips are intended for demanding laptops with desktop-like performance. Although they can technically be called AI computers, the low NPU performance of the Arrow Lake H does not meet the requirements. Microsoft’s Copilot+ icon (these require at least 40 TOPS NPU). You’ll be able to run basic AI features like Windows Studio Effects in video chats, but you’ll be able to perform more complex tasks like Recall.
Intel didn’t have many other details to share about Arrow Lake H, but we’ll hear more at CES 2025.
