A planned sequel and expansion were canceled and developer ZA/UM laid off some staff as a result. There was one over ownership over intellectual property. Still, the essence of the original game is very much alive, not least because a new studio is working on a spiritual successor. The project is slated to continue the “thoughtful, story-first approach that defined its predecessor.”
Some of the developers who worked on Disco Elysium and its sequel, along with people who worked at Bungie, Rockstar Games, Brave at Night and elsewhere, make up the 12-person team at London-based Longdue. according to the studio’s first game is billed as a “psychogeographical RPG” that explores the “subtle interplay between the conscious and the subconscious, the visible and the invisible.” In a world where choices oscillate between a character’s psyche and their environment, players will navigate an ever-changing landscape shaped by both internal and external forces.”
If you know anything about it Disco Elysiumthis should sound familiar enough. Not many other details about the game have been released to date, but Longdue has released a piece of concept art (above).
“At Longdue, we’ve been inspired by classic RPGs for decades Ultiima and Sorcerythrough Fallout and Planescapeto those who are rightly adored Disco Elysium,” Grant Roberts, director of narrative, formerly of Bungie and Rocksteady, said in a press release.
Longdue did not reveal all of the former ZA/UM developers involved, however Disco Elysium lead designer and writer Robert Kurvitz and lead artist Aleksander Rostov are not among them. In late 2022, ZA/UM’s new majority shareholders, along with writer Helen Hindpere, fired the pair, accusing them of misconduct and attempted intellectual property theft (among other things). Despite Kurvitz writing the novel on which the 2019 game world is based. Cases were opened and ZA/UM these were resolved last year. There is Kurvitz and Rostov own company, Red Info.
