ByteDance will reportedly use Huawei chips to train a new AI model

Three anonymous sources have applied Reuters with this information; a fourth source could not confirm that ByteDance is using Huawei chips, but said that a new AI model is under development.

Previously, ByteDance’s AI projects used NVIDIA’s H20 AI chips. and avoided trade restrictions imposed by the US government in 2022. Chinese customers were only allowed to buy selected models of AI chips, an attempt to slow China’s technological development.

ByteDance ordered 100,000 Ascend 910B chips from Huawei this year, but only received 30,000 of them. Huawei’s Ascend 910B chips are said to outperform NVIDIA’s A100 chips in GPU performance and computing power efficiency. However, chip shortages halted ByteDance’s AI model development project.

The news has yet to be confirmed by ByteDance, but it’s not the only company moving away from NVIDIA products. Many other Chinese companies are slowly switching to domestic chips.
