At some point, we’ve all encountered someone who doesn’t recognize boundaries. They get too deep into our personal space, oblivious to our concerns – or very aware. This problem is magnified online, where there is instant access to someone’s wider digital footprints, which can be a vector for abuse. That’s why most platforms have some sort of block feature that allows people to limit access to certain users’ lives.
Elon Musk announced that X has changed its policies to allow users you block to see your posts. They won’t be able to contact you, but they will see what you post on the platform. Musk has previously objected to the blocking feature, saying users can already overcome it by switching to an unblocked account. It’s true, in a sort of self-talking way, that he’s in a form that doesn’t respect someone’s boundaries.
Obviously, the reasons why this is a terrible, terrible, not good, and generally bad idea are so long that we’re forever trying to list them. But it’s a good reminder that X is a place that thinks trust and security are four-letter words.
