Danny Boyle’s zombie sequel 28 Years Later taken with several iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphones, . With a budget of around $75 million, this makes it the biggest film ever shot using iPhones.
There are some key caveats worth going over. First of all, the source in the story is anonymous because the cast of the film was required to sign an NDA. Also, the whole movie wasn’t shot with last year’s high-end Apple smartphone. Engadget confirmed that Boyle and his team used a bunch of different cameras, of which the iPhone 15 Pro Max is just one tool.
After all, it’s not like a filmmaker just places a smartphone on a tripod and calls it a day. Each iPhone is adapted to integrate with full-frame DSLR lenses. That being said, these pro-grade lenses cost a small fortune. Phones are also placed in protective cages.
While phones weren’t used exclusively to shoot this movie, it’s still a full-circle moment for Boyle and his team. Original 28 Days Later mostly struck in a it cost $4,000 at the time. This camcorder recorded on MiniDV tapes.
28 Years Later is the third entry in the franchise and is due to hit theaters in June 2025. The film stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Cillian Murphy. It will be the first of three new films . Plot details are not available, but all three upcoming films are written by Alex Garland. He co-wrote the first and has continued to lead genre fare ever since Ex Machina, and most recently Civil war. He also really underrated it .
