Amazon accused of deceptive ‘sales’ of its own products in lawsuit


Amazon is facing a class action lawsuit accusing the company of deceptive pricing. The lawsuit alleges that Amazon misled buyers by showing inflated list prices for Fire TVs, making the discounts appear more substantial than they actually were.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, alleges that the company routinely adopted the practice, calling it a “persistent and consistent pattern.” The lawsuit alleges that Amazon created “false list prices” for its Fire TVs, making the apparent “discounts” deceptive.

It then accuses the company of deceiving customers into continuing to buy Fire TVs by omitting “critical information” about the length of the sale and when the list price was used. This allegedly caused Amazon customers to spend “more money than they would have without the limited-time deals.” “Many of the Fire TVs have not been close to their advertised list prices for a year or more,” the lawsuit claims.

There are irregularities in the claim Washington Consumer Protection Actprohibits “unfair methods of competition and unfair or deceptive acts or practices in the conduct of any trade or commerce.” Plaintiff David Ramirez is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, in addition to an injunction to stop Amazon from continuing the alleged practices. The lawsuit seeks compensatory damages “in amounts determined by the court and/or jury” and prejudgment interest on anything awarded.

In the lawsuit a Similar case in California Starting in 2021, Amazon is prohibited from using false or misleading list prices in its ads. The company also agreed will pay about 2 million dollars penalties and restitution as part of that settlement. It’s still early days when it comes to this.

An Amazon spokeswoman in Seattle declined to comment KIRO 7 news organization. We’ve reached out to the company for comment and will update when we hear back.
