The Nintendo Switch is now seven years old and needs an update, even if the storied console maker isn’t chasing specs like its rival. Rumors of a Nintendo Switch 2 (again, I’d bet real money it won’t be called that) have even been bouncing around for years. Sometimes they teased DLSS, NVIDIA’s “deep learning super-sampling” upscaling technology to add brightness and higher resolution to existing Switch games. Other times, rumors have resulted in just an OLED Switch – basically the same console as the original.
Will it be something like the Wii? Another left turn, console wise? Or something evolutionary like the Wii U or GameBoy Color. It’s unlikely that the company will abandon the hybrid form factor, as it effectively melds home and portable consoles together — and is probably a big reason for the Switch’s success.
We expect it to be backwards compatible with the Switch’s game library, while Nintendo’s account system management should make the transition between console generations smoother than in the past. More importantly, when will it start? While it’s mostly speculation, Nintendo’s next console could be out in March 2025, but that comes with an appropriate level of skepticism.
