Sony has just released a PS5 system update that includes new options for customizing the home screen. The newly announced Welcome center is basically a blank canvas that users can fill with various widgets that show the console’s storage space, battery level for accessories, online friends, trophies and more. It replaces the current Explore tab.
These widgets can be resized and arranged in different ways, adding another layer of customization. The background can also be changed, allowing players to choose from animated effects or screenshots. It’s still far from that type (reference intended). systemic topics of the PS3/PS4 era, but it’s just the beginning.
The PS5 Welcome Center is rolling out to US customers today, though it’s being rolled out gradually, so it could take a few days to hit every console. Sony says other parts of the world will get the feature “in the coming weeks,” with Japan and Europe getting the first jumps.
That’s not the only feature coming with this latest system update. Sony also provides customized 3D audio profiles for headphones and earphones, allowing players to make various adjustments to better suit their unique “hearing characteristics.” This is still in beta. There is also adaptive charging for PS5 Slim and the upcoming (and very expensive) PS5 Proin addition to the ability to remotely activate the game for individual users.
Sony also teased something coming in the next few weeks. Soon, users will be able to share voice chat links from parties in any messaging or social media app. This means that players will be able to invite people to join one of these chats even if they are not friends on PlayStation Network.
