Sony unveils its PS5 Pro console, which will cost you a whopping $700

Sony has officially announced the long-awaited PS5 Pro. You’ll have to dig deep into your pocket for that, though: the new console costs $700 and will arrive on November 7th. Pre-orders start on September 26. As with the PS5 Slimif you want a disk drive or vertical stand, you’ll have to shell out extra.

The Pro offers some notable improvements over the features of the original PS5 was released in 2020. Sony hopes to narrow the gap between fidelity and performance modes that gamers are used to choosing from. The idea is to offer improved graphics performance at more consistent frame rates across the board. To do this, Sony focused on three key improvements: a larger GPU, advanced ray tracing, and AI-driven upscaling.

That GPU has 67 percent more compute units and 28 percent faster RAM than the standard PS5. So, according to the console’s lead architect Mark Cerny, the new console will be able to provide up to 45 percent faster rendering. Ray-tracing performance can be up to three times faster than PS5. Meanwhile, Sony’s AI upscaling technology (aka NVIDIA’s take on DLSS) is called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR.

Naturally, Sony’s own studios update their games to take advantage of these improvements. Cernys presentation highlighted The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 such as some games that would benefit from improved visual fidelity and/or frame rates. Third-party partners also plan to take advantage of the additional power of the PS5 Pro. Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Final fantasy 7 rebirth. Games patched or developed for the new system will have the PS5 Pro Enhanced label.

Other features include a game booster tool that can improve or stabilize the performance of more than 8,500 backwards compatible PS4 games, Sony says. The feature can improve the performance of PS5 games that aren’t obviously upgraded for the Pro. The company adds that its Enhanced Image Quality tool will also improve the resolution of certain PS4 games. Other features include Wi-Fi 7, variable refresh rate and 8K resolution support.

Sony managed to make the PS5 Pro more powerful than the massive original model without making it bigger. It has the same height as the original PS5 and the same width as the discless model. Along with DualSense controller and bright Astro game room, The PS5 Pro comes with 2TB of internal storage, which is a nice upgrade from the 1TB on previous models.

That $700 price tag might deter many people from buying the PS5 Pro. But hey, at least Sony is offering gamers a tangible hardware upgrade. The the latest Xbox systems either change the color of the console, add some memory, or remove the Series X disk drive.

It’s hard to keep a lot of secrets around new gaming hardware, so today’s announcement won’t come as a surprise. There have been several leaks this year, one from a YouTube channel in May and then again in August From user Dealabs.
