Two AirPods models were highly anticipated today iPhone 16 eventone of which will add active noise cancellation (ANC) to “regular” AirPods for the first time. There are other upgrades for the $179 version, but after a brief demo of the ANC setup AirPods 4There will be noise barriers the a major selling point for most people.
Apple uses this version of AirPods 4 to bridge the gap between AirPods and AirPods Pro. As such, this model has some features that were previously exclusive to the company’s most expensive buds. These include Siri interactions that let you accept or reject calls by nodding, Adaptive Audio, Sound Isolation, and more. included – all thanks to the H2 chip powering the Pro model. All of these will be welcome improvements for people who prefer the open fit of the AirPods 4, but the ANC is the most impressive addition in my book.
I got a quick demo of the AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation in the chaotic hands-on area at Apple Park. Honestly, it’s the perfect place to try ANC. After I had the AirPods 4 in my ears and played some music, I turned on the noise cancellation to silence the room. And he almost did. I’m impressed with how effective the ANC is on these headphones that don’t completely seal off your ears. Most open-type designs with ANC are barely affected by environmental distractions, but affect battery life. Here, I could be in a room by myself and only be aware of the noise around me when the transparency mode snaps me back to reality.
Apple has updated the design for AirPods 4, calling them “the fittest AirPods ever.” This elegant shape helps increase passive noise isolation while keeping your ears open for this standard audio mode, in addition to some software recommendations and acoustic performance. ANC is another place where Apple can flex its H2 chip muscles, and the AirPods 4 performance in this regard is a testament to the component’s capabilities.
Note that the transparency mode on AirPods 4 did not sound as natural as on AirPods Pro. This is mainly due to the fact that I do not feel that the headphones sound as good to my voice as the more expensive models. In fact, I felt that it was not difficult at all. The Apple rep explained that the difference could be attributed to a number of factors, including the fact that my ears weren’t completely closed.
