X got into the streaming wars, sort of. X TV announced that the app was teasing — is now available for some Amazon Fire TV, Google TV and some LG panels.
If your TV doesn’t fit into one of these categories, don’t worry. You are not missing anything.
A short teaser video included in the beta app announcement shows what appears to be Google’s version of the app with a regular-looking streaming video interface. The platform has links to videos for a very small number of original shows, such as right-wing dog whistler Tucker Carlson and accounts of SpaceX and Tesla. However, the actual app (or at least the version for Amazon Fire TVs) looks nothing like the video and offers much less in terms of content.
Currently, the X TV app is just a video delivery system for the X app. You’ll need an X account to sign in, and it sends you to a curated list of X videos already on the platform. However, what appear to be standard recommendations are truly repulsive to anyone who doesn’t share Musk’s political mindset.
I used an account that doesn’t follow many users, and among the videos X TV suggested to me when I first watched it was a Megyn Kelly video accusing Tim Walz of “stolen bravado,” a report by right-wing social media influencer Andy. Ngo and Carlson’s fascinating interview with historian Darryl Cooper, who plays some revisionist history Winston calls Churchill “The main villain of the Second World War.”
X TV’s video library reflects its users; after years of liberal leanings, its most active user base is now conservative fans, whom X dangles over regardless of red meat. The videos on the show may entertain those users, and Musk’s fan club may finally be happy to have a streaming app on smart TVs, but even if you’re in this demo, it’s a disappointingly barebones app compared to rivals like Rumble.
