Bandai has released a new Tamagotchi model, and it’s actually made from recycled eggshells. The The Original Tamagotchi Celebration the digital pet is even colored like a black/brown egg, with green and white designs along with pink accents and buttons. Tamagotchi comes from the Japanese words for egg (tamago) and clock (uotchi) – and the toy is unmistakably egg-shaped – so the use of eggshells in particular is quite the brand. The model is paired with packaging that also uses recycled paper, and Bandai says the model is in line with its mission to “promote a greener future.”
The Tamagotchi is no longer just another 90s toy that millennials fondly remember playing with in their youth. Over the past few years, it has quietly made a comeback, with both old-timers and kids alike contributing to its renewed popularity. Company in May Tamagotchi Connection has been re-releasedolder fans may remember it as the model with fake antennas to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Last year, Bandai released one with Wi-Fi Tamagotchi Uni It gives users access to the Tamaverse, a virtual playground where players can meet others so they can travel together and dress up as their characters.
The Original Tamagotchi doesn’t have the more modern features of the Celebration Uni, but it does come with a basic Tamagotchi game. Players will have to raise the Tamagotchi to adulthood, feed it, give it medicine, clean up its mess, play with it, and even discipline it if it acts up. It’s only available on Amazon, where it’s currently on pre-order for $30.
