Plaud NotePin by limiting its scope, it disturbed competing products. This thing is not a digital assistant that will make every aspect of modern life easier. Although it is a device with some AI bells and whistles, it is a recording device.
NotePin automatically records and transcribes conversations, and that’s pretty much it. I could see this being beneficial for students, stopping the cruel punishment known as “note taking”. The same goes for people who get stuck in an endless kaleidoscope of meetings.
Artificial intelligence comes into play in several ways. First of all, this thing is not stuck in English. Pin can transcribe and translate 59 languages, with more on the way. It will also allegedly focus on context to correctly name each speaker and turn the conversation into something resembling a script.
Finally, there’s an AI analysis component that sums it all up. This information is accessible through the chat window, so you can ask specific questions about any of the dozens of conversations you’ve had while wearing the pin.
NotePin is small and light, the company says it weighs the same as an AA battery. This form factor will allow users to pin it almost anywhere, so it won’t be as obvious as the hot (and heavy) Humane AI pin. Pre-orders are available now and are quite reasonable at $170. However, if you want to record more than 300 minutes of audio per month, an $80 annual subscription is required.
But I’m not done. This is where things get weird. This is the first step in the company’s plans for something great. Plaud hopes to one day use the collection of records to create a “digital twin” of each user. .
“One day you will be able to use artificial intelligence to reproduce yourself – create this real digital twin. It’s kind of like this great mission, we think it’s great if we can help users connect to so many memories,” said Nathan Hsu, CEO of Plaud.
However, Hsu says this dream could take “decades” to achieve, so unlike other AI companies out there, it’s at least realistic. I also don’t want a digital twin. One is enough for me, thank you very much.
For now, there’s NotePin. I see no reason why it shouldn’t work (mostly) as advertised. I also don’t see why anyone would need to when they already carry around a computer with a microphone that can very easily accommodate software to do everything NotePin can do. Shrug your shoulders.
